I would have felt much better about my position here and about what is expected of me, but I can’t get comfortable. Tonight is the night of a full moon, the first of my stay. I set up my kennel in my room, putting a bowl of grilled chicken leftovers and another of water inside so that I won’t get too restless as the night’s hours pass on. I also toss in a rope for good measure.

Most wolves get to enjoy their time running wild, but I can’t make that bet. Not this time, and not after what I did to Sarah and Vince’s home. I take my leash, a clunky chained ensemble with a handle reinforced with black duck tape. Then I start my march. I first reach Lacey as she dusts the heavy curtains in the living room. Today is rainy again, so the curtains are removed and more light spills into the room than usual. “Care to chain me up tonight? My kennel has a key I’ve gotten too good at using, so I need assistance.”

She shrugs. “I would, and I might, but I just got word that Sebastian is coming home tomorrow. So I can’t.”

“I can take some of your workload if you want. I’ve done housekeeping work before.”

She shakes her head. “Ask the others first. I’ll be working late as it is.”

In resignation, I hunt down Ian Black. I find him standing next to the kitchen sink, polishing silverware I literally just washed. I freeze at the sight before I can even say anything to him, and I decide to keep walking instead.

This leaves only Derek and his men. “Hey Derek,” I say as I stride into the tennis court near the lawn. “Are you free tonight?”

“Want to explore the place together as wolves?” he teases. Then he sees the chain. His brows lower, and the smile dissolves on his face.

“I can’t explore anything; I shouldn’t even be loose. I have problems in my wolf form.”

“What kind of problems?”

I swallow, and my throat hurts.

“Everyone gets a little wild sometimes,” he says. “Learning to deal with it makes you stronger.”

“I can’t,” I say.

He raises his eyebrows, intrigued.

“I have a personality disorder that affects me when I’m a wolf,” I say. “I lose my head every month, completely wild and destructive and insane, and I need someone else to lock me in my kennel and chain me to it, or I swear I will destroy the entire mansion tonight before Sebastian gets back.”

“It can’t be that bad,” he tries to assure me.

“No. It can. I almost got myself expelled from CAIL after I ruined everyone’s graduation cakes. I had to break up with my last boyfriend about it last month because he couldn’t stand the animal I turn into...”

“You’re hardly an animal,” says Derek. “You’re the gentlest person I know.”

I take a breath, and before I know it, I’m spilling everything to him. Everything. The ruined craft projects and household objects, the wanton destruction that defines my
